In western Estonia, the Kasari River slows as it approaches the Baltic Sea. Its waters spread outward through floodplains, reedbeds and shallow lagoons before finally reaching Matsalu Bay.
Here, the boundary between land and sea blends together. Freshwater from inland Estonia mixes with the Baltic's brackish coastal waters, while sediments carried downstream settle across the shallows. Each spring, floods temporarily transform the meadows and wetlands into broad inland lakes.
