PROTECT BALTIC is here to ensure sufficient protection and restoration in the
Baltic Sea's marine environment.
The project aims to secure biodiversity, maintain ecosystem function, produce ecosystems services, and enable sustainable use.
PROTECT BALTIC is an EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters project funded by Horizon Europe under the
Grant agreement 101112866.
The project carries forward the EU's Restore of Ocean and Waters Mission. With a 2030 target, the mission aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments.
PROTECT BALTIC is dedicated to achieving biodiversity goals in the Baltic Sea region.
The project aligns with key strategies outlined in HELCOM's
Baltic Sea Action Plan, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity targets.
PROTECT BALTIC develops a methodology to identify, map, quantify and value ecosystem services.
The project collaborates across disciplines, considering species, habitats, and human activities, to support marine conservation and optimize the
marine protected area (MPA) network.
PROTECT BALTIC operates from
August 2023 to August 2028.
The project aims to spot and address protection gaps, offering solutions and support to decision makers.
As real substantiated change takes time, the project represents a long-term commitment to establishing scalable and replicable models that extend beyond 2028.
