Protection optimization framework

Our protection optimization framework is a groundbreaking decision-support package that brings together the entire Baltic region. For the first time, countries are collaborating on a transparent, data-driven, science-based process to identify protection and restoration targets—and to agree on the best ways to achieve them.

The framework turns this process into real action by guiding the strategic implementation of protection and restoration measures at the right ecological scales, both in space and time. Cutting-edge modelling tools ensure that decisions are precise and effective.

Co-created with Baltic Sea countries, the framework acts as a blueprint for planning, execution, governance, management, and monitoring of Baltic Sea protection and restoration.

It gives each country a solid foundation to optimize spatial protection, improve governance, and adaptively manage efforts.

The ultimate goal: to preserve biodiversity and safeguard the essential ecosystem functions and services of the Baltic Sea.
