On 1 August 2024, we are proud to be able to bring MPA Day to Europe's shores for the first time.
MPA Day helps us collectively appreciate the value of marine protected areas (MPAs) and how they benefit both us and the incredible marine biodiversity they are designed to protect. It’s a day to share stories and information about why and how we need to conserve our oceans and keep building support for MPAs.
People protect what they love, and they can only learn to love what they know, so sharing the beauty and merit of our MPAs is central to protecting marine ecosystems, not just in the Baltic Sea but globally.
Our seas need our support now more than ever, so we are very excited to unite with partners in South Africa and across the world to underscore the vital role of MPAs in preserving our oceans' biodiversity.
Watch our special MPA Day webinar as we present the MPA Guide, an essential resource that you can make use of to enhance marine protection efforts worldwide.
Join us to explore the rocky shores of the Table Mountain National Park MPA, the sandy beaches of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, the mangroves adjacent to the uThukela MPA, the unique Walker Bay MPA, and the cold waters of the Baltic Sea.
Hosted by the Blue Centre Gotland (BCG), HopeSpot Gotland and the Ar Research Station at Uppsala University, you can join this event and engage in discussions about marine biodiversity, as well as the future national park Bästeträsk.
The 4th annual Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day on 1 August 2024 welcomes even more support from around the world as the event continues to grow.
Themed Celebrating MPAs - for People and for Nature, MPA Day invites people across the globe to recognize the importance of these ‘nature reserves of the sea’.

In the build-up to the 4th annual Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day celebration on 1 August 2024, some of the younger MPA community have shared their unique insights into the world of conservation.
In addition to the vital contribution MPAs play in marine life protection, they also serve to create economic opportunities for local citizens, including the youth.
