Science and policy alone cannot protect the sea. For change to happen, people need to see, hear, and feel why marine protection matters. That is the driving force behind the Communications work in the project.
To take the project’s knowledge and tools out of meeting rooms and reports, and bring them into the wider world—raising awareness, sparking dialogue, and ensuring that results make a real difference across the Baltic region and beyond.
Work Package 9 is led by Paul Trouth from HELCOM Secretariat.

Every story needs a voice. Work Package 9 began by shaping a Communications Strategy—defining how the project speaks, who it speaks to, and what it wants to achieve.
To give that voice a recognizable face, a Visual Identity—with logo, colour palette, templates, and guidelines—was created to unite all activities under a coherent look and feel.
The project website serves as the heartbeat: a central hub for partners, policymakers, and the public to find updates, resources, and insights.
From there, social media carries the message outward, weaving the Baltic Sea into daily conversations. Short posts capture attention, articles and news blasts dive deeper, MPA Highlights celebrate the region's stories and beauty, and visuals make complex issues accessible.
Communication here is not a one-way broadcast. It is about building conversations and communities.
At the Baltic Stakeholder Conference, hundreds of participants came together to kickoff the project and exchange knowledge.
Through workshops like Generation Sea, young people shared their hopes and fears for the future of the Baltic, reminding decision-makers what is at stake.
And by taking a leading role for MPA Day—an event where, thousands across the globe celebrate the importance of Marine Protected Areas—we're joining a chorus of voices that carry beyond the region.
Each of these moments demonstrates that the project's communication is not decoration—it is transformation. It brings science and policy to life, and it turns data into stories that people can care about and act upon.
As the project moves forward, it continues to expand its reach and creativity, going beyond traditional channels. It uses videos to tell stories that move, webinars to spark meaningful discussions, and events to connect people who might otherwise never meet.
It also experiments with fresh approaches—like an augmented reality app that turns marine protection into an immersive experience, making the invisible visible and bringing the sea closer to those who cannot step into it every day.
Future outputs will include more webinars, an ocean literacy kit, an outreach video, and a final project conference—all designed to ensure that the knowledge generated does not fade once the project ends.
Instead, it will live on in policy discussions, communities, and the continued work of HELCOM, giving the Baltic Sea the care it deserves.
Through this work, we're aiming to ensure the project is not only seen but remembered—giving the Baltic Sea a louder, clearer, and more enduring voice, one that resonates across borders and generations.
